Buying a domain is easier than you may think, most ISPs provide a simple mechanism for you to register an Internet domain. I am a mamber of Nominet and a Nominet Registrar so I register .co.uk domains direct but in getting to where we I am I have used names.co.uk, 123-reg.co.uk and 1&1 Internet Limited, amongst others. Tip: look at them in the order listed then go back to the first to register your names. It doesn't cost much to register a domain name so don't try to save a few pennies... names.co.uk is going to give you the best service, and I speak from bitter experience.

Most ISPs provide hosting, and indeed whoever you're connected to the Internet with as you read this, probably provides hosting. You'll probably get a bit of web space with your ADSL/cable account which will have an address of something like... fredblogs56.acmeisp.net which is a bit cumbersome. You may be able to point you domain towards this webspace but the whole exercise will be a bit painful. If you have a bunch of domains then it is really nice to have them hosted somewhere that gives you easy control. There are many but the one I recommend is Rochen. You can get cheaper hosting but their support is excellent, as is the control panel and the servers are in the UK. For a cheaper solution you could try 1&1 Internet Limited or 123-reg.co.uk but be aware that you won't get such good service if there is a problem with the hosting (e.g. if there is a server issue perhaps). I have used both these companies in the past and they were good until I needed to actually communicate with someone...

OK, so you got your domain but your not sure what to do with it... An alternative, and very popular, to creating a site is to park the domain. You simply register your domain and then point it at a domain parking company who will serve up pages of pay per click (PPC) advertising links... a bit like a search engine would return. When people search for something in, say, Google your page will appear in the list of results (if it is appropriate) and if the user clicks on your link the parking company serves up your domains page. If the vsitor sees a link on that page that is of interest then you get a small commission if they click and later buy something. The links that are served up are relevant to the original search.
