Prior to the end of your period of registration you will renew that registration so the domain is effectively yours forever as long as you keep renewing the registration.

If a domain is already registered and is in use with an active website there is little chance that the current registrant will release it. If however the domain is dormant and shows nothing or just a parking page (page of links) it may be obtainable.

Do a Whois lookup on the Nominet home page (for .uk domains only). The result will tell you the registrant (owner) and the registrar (the company that manages it).
